Sustainability at Louis Matisse
Not a promise — a practice.
At Louis Matisse, sustainability is not an aspiration. It is the foundation of every decision we make.
Why Linen
We choose linen because it is one of the most sustainable materials on Earth. It requires no irrigation, no pesticides, and no GMOs — only sun, rain, and time. Compared to cotton, linen uses just a quarter of the water, and leaves almost no waste.
Carbon Footprint (MJ/kg):
Linen – 10 | Cotton – 49 | Polyester – 109 | Leather – 147

How It’s Made
Our linen is grown in northern France and woven in a 190-year-old mill that continues to operate with minimal environmental impact.
Every bag is then crafted — start to finish — by a single artisan in France, under fair, respectful working conditions.
We do not mass-produce. We believe that time, care, and small batches lead to better things — for people and for the planet.
Packaging With Purpose
We use minimal packaging, and only recyclable materials. Our dust bag is made of linen — reusable for daily life or travel.
Sustainability Is Shared
We believe in balance, not charity.
While we support jobs for artisans and farmers in France, a portion of our profits also goes to arts and culture education for youth in Africa — the continent that helped inspire our founding vision.
To us, sustainability means living with care, sharing with humility, and building a future where craftsmanship and community thrive together.
